Monte Carlo calculations of polarized microwave radiation emerging from cloud structures

چکیده
The last decade has seen tremendous growth in cloud dynamical and microphysical models that are able to simulate storms and storm systems with very high spatial resolution, typically of the order of a few kilometers. The fairly realistic distributions of cloud and hydrometeor properties that these models generate has, in turn, led to a renewed interest in the three-dimensional microwave radiative transfer modeling needed to understand the effect of cloud and rainfall inhomogeneities upon microwave observations. Monte Carlo methods and particularly backward Monte Carlo methods have shown themselves to be very desirable because of the quick convergence of the solutions. Unfortunately, backward Monte Carlo methods are not well suited to treat polarized radiation. This study reviews existing Monte Carlo methods and presents a new polarized Monte Carlo radiative transfer code. The code is based on a forward scheme but uses biasing techniques to keep the computational requirements equivalent to the backward solution. Radiative transfer computations have been performed using a microphysicaldynamical cloud model, and the results are presented together with the algorithm description.

Radiation therapy calculations using an on-demand virtual cluster via cloud computing
Computer hardware costs are the limiting factor in producing highly accurate radiation dose calculations on convenient time scales. Because of this, largescale, full Monte Carlo simulations and other resource intensive algorithms are often considered infeasible for clinical settings. The emerging cloud computing paradigm promises to fundamentally alter the economics of such calculations by prov...

متن کاملMean-field energy-level shifts and dielectric properties of strongly polarized Rydberg gases
Mean-field energy-level shifts arising as a result of strong electrostatic dipole interactions within dilute gases of polarized helium Rydberg atoms have been probed by microwave spectroscopy. The Rydberg states studied had principal quantum numbers n = 70 and 72, and electric dipole moments of up to 14 050 D, and were prepared in pulsed supersonic beams at particle number densities on the orde...
متن کاملComparison of dosimetry parameters of two commercially available Iodine brachytherapy seeds using Monte Carlo calculations
Background: Iodine brachytherapy sources with low photon energies have been widely used in treating cancerous tumors. Dosimetric parameters of brachytherapy sources should be determined according to AAPM TG-43U1 recommendations before clinical use. Monte Carlo codes are reliable tools in calculation of these parameters for brachytherapy sources. Materials and Methods: Dosimetric param...
متن کاملA Monte Carlo Study for Photoneutron Dose Estimations around the High-Energy Linacs
Background: High-energy linear accelerator (linac) is a valuable tool and the most commonly device for external beam radiation treatments in cancer patients. In the linac head, high-energy photons with energies above the threshold of interaction produce photoneutrons. These photoneutrons deliver the extra dose to the patients in the planning treatment and increase the risk of secondary cancer.O...
